A diesel generator needs four things from its installation: outdoor or well-ventilated placement, unobstructed cooling airflow, an exhaust path that carries fumes away from people, and a level, rigid base. Get those four right and a properly sized genset will run for years. Get any of them wrong and you’ll see overheating, shutdowns, or a genuine safety hazard — no matter how good the machine is.
This guide covers the decisions in the order you’ll face them. It applies to open-frame and silent (enclosed) diesel generators in the small-to-medium power classes used on farms, worksites, shops, and small industrial sites.
Step 1 — Choose the location (the decision that constrains everything else)
- Never indoors without engineered ventilation. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide — colorless, odorless, and lethal in enclosed spaces. A garage with the door open is not ventilation.
- Prefer a dedicated outdoor spot or an open-sided shelter: rain protection above, air moving freely on all sides.
- Keep the unit away from windows, doors, and air intakes of occupied buildings, and position it so prevailing wind carries exhaust away from them.
- Leave about one meter of clear space on every side as a working rule — for cooling air, refueling, and maintenance access. Check your unit’s manual; enclosed silent units state their own minimum clearances.

Step 2 — Ventilation: the airflow budget nobody calculates
A diesel engine consumes air twice: for combustion and — far more of it — for cooling. The radiator or cooling fan must be able to pull fresh air in on one side and push hot air out the other without the two streams mixing.

The working rule: cooling air in low on one side, hot air out high on the opposite side, and never let the outlet blow toward the intake.
Step 3 — Exhaust: route it, don’t just aim it
- Point the exhaust outlet away from buildings, downwind, and never toward a walkway.
- If you extend the exhaust with piping, keep the run short and with few bends — every bend adds back-pressure, which costs power and raises exhaust temperature. Long runs need a larger pipe diameter; follow the engine manual’s limits.
- Use a flexible section between engine and any fixed piping so vibration doesn’t crack the manifold.
- Terminate with a rain cap or a 45° downward cut so water can’t enter a stopped engine.
Step 4 — Foundation and vibration
- A small genset needs a level, rigid surface: a concrete pad is ideal; compacted gravel with a paver base works for portable units.
- Keep the unit level within a few degrees — diesel engines lubricate and read fuel level correctly only near horizontal.
- Anti-vibration mounts between frame and pad stop vibration from migrating into structures and loosening fittings over time.
- Raise the pad slightly above grade so rain runoff and washdown water drain away from the unit.
Step 5 — Electrical: grounding and the changeover switch
- Ground the unit according to your local electrical code — typically a dedicated earth rod bonded to the generator’s ground terminal. Local code always wins over any general advice.
- If the generator backs up a building supply, install a transfer switch (manual or automatic) so the generator and the grid can never feed the same circuit at once. Backfeeding through a wall socket is illegal almost everywhere and endangers line workers.

First-start checklist
- Engine oil and coolant at correct levels (unit level when checking)
- Fuel fresh and clean; water separator drained
- Clearances respected; nothing stored against the unit
- Exhaust route clear, pointing away from openings
- Ground connection made; transfer switch in the correct position
- First run at light load for the break-in period the manual specifies
