The choice is decided by your loads, not by preference: if anything you power is a three-phase machine, you need a three-phase generator; if everything is ordinary single-phase equipment, a single-phase set is simpler and does the job. That’s the whole rule. The rest of this guide explains how to read your loads, the traps in mixing the two, and the details (voltage, motor starting, balance) that catch buyers out.
What the two systems actually are
- Single-phase power is what ordinary sockets deliver: one alternating voltage (commonly 220–240 V in 50 Hz markets). Lighting, tools, refrigeration, small pumps — the everyday world runs on it.
- Three-phase power delivers three alternating voltages offset from each other (commonly 380–415 V between phases in 50 Hz markets). It moves more power through thinner conductors and — decisively — drives industrial motors far better: three-phase motors are simpler, cheaper per kW, start more smoothly, and dominate above a few kW.
Step 1 — Inventory your loads (this decides everything)
Walk the site and read every nameplate:

The reverse never works: a single-phase generator cannot run a three-phase machine. Buying single-phase “for now” when a three-phase mill is arriving next season is the classic false economy.
Step 2 — Know that three-phase includes single-phase
A three-phase generator provides single-phase outlets too: between any one phase and neutral you get normal 220–240 V for lights and tools. So a mixed site is served by one three-phase set — with one discipline: spread the single-phase loads across the three phases roughly evenly. Loading one phase heavily while the others idle (imbalance) overheats the alternator and trips protection. As a working rule, keep the difference between the most- and least-loaded phase modest; your electrician balances the distribution board once, and it stays balanced.
Step 3 — Think about motor starting, not just running
Electric motors draw several times their rated current at start — this often sets the generator size, whichever phase you choose (the arithmetic is in how to size a diesel generator). Two phase-specific notes:
- Three-phase motors start more gracefully and put less strain per phase on the alternator.
- A large single-phase motor (say a big compressor) is the hardest start of all — if your site is built around one, a generous single-phase set or a switch to a three-phase machine both deserve a look.
Step 4 — Frequency and voltage are separate decisions
Phase choice doesn’t settle frequency (50 vs 60 Hz) or voltage — those follow your country’s grid standard and your equipment plates. Confirm all three (phase / voltage / frequency) before ordering; none can be “adjusted later” in any practical way. A supplier quoting a genset should ask you for all three; if they don’t, ask why.

The mistakes that cost rewiring
- Buying single-phase with a three-phase machine on the purchase list. The generator becomes a paperweight the day the machine arrives.
- Ignoring phase balance on a mixed three-phase installation — trips and overheating that get blamed on the “faulty” generator.
- Matching phase but not voltage/frequency — a 60 Hz machine on a 50 Hz set runs slow, hot, or not at all.
