Yes — and it damages the most expensive parts first. Water, dirt, and aged diesel attack the injection pump and injectors, components machined to tolerances finer than a human hair. An engine that swallowed dust through a torn air filter can often be rebuilt affordably; an injection system ruined by bad fuel frequently costs more than the wear parts of the whole engine. Here is how each contaminant does its damage, the early symptoms, and the storage habits that prevent almost all of it.
The four contaminants, and what each one does
Water
Water enters through condensation in half-empty tanks, rain through bad seals, and already-wet fuel from the supplier. In the injection system it does three things: it corrodes precision surfaces, it lubricates poorly (diesel itself lubricates the pump; water strips that protection), and in the worst case a slug of water reaching the injector tip flashes to steam and blows the tip off. Rust flakes from a corroded tank then become abrasive sediment — water creates the next contaminant.
Dirt and sediment
Particles harder than steel — dust, rust, tank scale — grind the pump’s plungers and the injector’s needle seats. The wear is gradual and invisible: pressure drops, atomization degrades, and one day the engine smokes, knocks, and loses power “for no reason.” The reason arrived months earlier, one dirty fill at a time.
Aged / degraded fuel
Diesel is not a long-life product. Stored carelessly it oxidizes, darkens, and forms gums and varnish that coat filters and stick injector needles. Fuel that has sat for many months — common with standby generators — deserves suspicion before it deserves a cranking battery. High sulfur
In many markets diesel sulfur content is high or inconsistent. A mechanically injected engine tolerates it; the emission-control hardware on modern electronically controlled engines (common-rail, particulate filters) does not — high-sulfur fuel clogs and poisons those systems. Warning signs, from cheap to expensive

The pattern to respect: filters clogging early is information, not annoyance. A filter that blocks in half its expected life is telling you the tank or the supply is dirty.
Storage rules that prevent nearly all of it
- Keep tanks full, especially overnight and between seasons — a full tank has no air to condense water from.
- Buy from high-turnover suppliers. Fuel that sat in someone else’s tank for a year doesn’t improve in yours.
- Let deliveries settle. After filling a storage tank, give sediment and water a few hours to sink before drawing fuel.
- Draw from above the bottom. Fixed tanks should feed from a pickup above the sludge zone, with a drain valve at the true bottom — and use that drain on schedule.
- Seal everything. Caps, vents with filters, no open funnels in dusty yards. Most dirt enters during transfer, not in the tanker.
- Drain the water separator on the engine as part of the daily walk-around, and change fuel filters on schedule — sooner where fuel quality is known to be rough.

Fuel reality should shape the machine you buy. Where fuel is clean and low-sulfur, any modern engine thrives. Where quality varies — remote sites, seasonal supply chains — a mechanically injected engine with generous, serviceable filtration is the honest choice: it tolerates what the fuel throws at it, and any local workshop can service it.
