What Size Diesel Water Pump Do I Need for Irrigation? (Hectares to m³/h, Step by Step)

Start from the field, not the pump: hectares and crop water need give you the flow, the irrigation method gives you the pressure. A step-by-step method with a worked example.

Size an irrigation pump from the field, not from the catalog: your area and crop water need determine the flow (m³/h), your irrigation method determines the pressure, and the terrain adds the lift. Put those three numbers together and the right pump picks itself. This guide walks the calculation in the order that avoids the two classic mistakes — buying by horsepower, and copying a neighbor whose field is not yours.

Step 1 — Turn hectares into cubic meters per day

Crops consume water in millimeters per day — and one millimeter over one hectare is 10 m³ of water. In warm growing season, field crops commonly need somewhere around 4–8 mm/day (local agronomy advice beats any table; soil and climate move this number a lot).

Daily volume (m³/day) = area (ha) × water need (mm/day) × 10

So 3 hectares at 6 mm/day ≈ 180 m³ per day.

Step 2 — Decide your pumping window, get the flow

You don’t irrigate 24 hours a day. Divide the daily volume by the hours you will actually run the pump:

Flow Q (m³/h) = daily volume ÷ pumping hours

Those 180 m³ pumped over a 6-hour morning shift require 30 m³/h; spread over 10 hours, only 18 m³/h. A longer window means a smaller, cheaper pump running closer to its efficient point — if your labor schedule and water rights allow it.

Step 3 — Add the pressure your irrigation method demands

This is why “the same field” can need completely different pumps: flood irrigation is a flow problem; sprinklers turn it into a head problem.

Step 4 — Add lift and friction, get total head

As in any pump selection, total head = static lift (water surface to the highest outlet) + friction losses (pipe length and diameter) + the pressure head from Step 3. Two irrigation-specific traps:

Worked example

2.5 ha of vegetables under sprinklers, 6 mm/day, pumped over 5 hours from a canal 3 m below the field, 120 m of delivery pipe:

  1. Daily volume: 2.5 × 6 × 10 = 150 m³/day
  2. Flow: 150 ÷ 5 = 30 m³/h
  3. Pressure for sprinklers: ~30 m
  4. Head: 3 m lift + ~4 m friction + 30 m pressure ≈ 37 m total

You’re looking for a pump that delivers 30 m³/h at ~37 m near the middle of its curve. That’s typically high-pressure pump territory — a standard centrifugal that moves 30 m³/h at 15 m will not run your sprinklers, no matter its horsepower. Compare both families in the water pump catalog.

Don’t forget the engine side

A diesel irrigation pump is a diesel engine on a schedule: it runs every day of the season. Fuel consumption scales with the duty point you chose — another reason not to oversize — and the engine needs its oil and filter intervals respected right through harvest. One more habit worth building: recheck the numbers each season. Crops rotate, planted area grows, and a pump sized snugly for this year’s two hectares becomes the bottleneck when you add a third. Sizing with a modest margin now is cheaper than replacing the whole set later.
