How Quiet Is a Silent Diesel Generator? dB Levels Explained

'Silent' means an enclosure, a spec, and a measuring distance — not silence. How to read dB numbers honestly and decide when the enclosed set is worth it.

Reviewed by Jim Yue, Head of Supply Chain

A silent diesel generator is not silent. It is enclosed. A well-built silent (canopied) set in the small and medium classes typically runs under 75 dB(A) measured at 7 meters. Nearby, people can talk normally; next door, it is barely noticeable. An open-frame set of the same power commonly measures 10–15 dB higher. Because decibels are logarithmic, that is a large difference. This guide explains how to read the noise figures on a datasheet.

What the dB figures sound like

dB(A)Sounds like
50–55Quiet office, moderate rainfall
60–65Normal conversation at 1 m
70–75Busy street heard from the sidewalk: a typical silent generator set at 7 m
80–85Typical open-frame generator set; a heavy truck passing
95+Bare engine at close range; hearing protection required

Two facts explain the table. First, the scale is logarithmic: each 10 dB is roughly a doubling of perceived loudness. So a 75 dB silent set sounds about half as loud as an 85 dB open-frame set. Second, distance reduces noise: in open ground, sound falls by roughly 6 dB each time you double the distance from the source. A machine rated 75 dB @ 7 m measures ~69 dB at 14 m and ~63 dB at 28 m. Behind a wall, it fades into the background.

How to read a noise specification

Where the quiet comes from, and what it costs

The enclosure does four jobs: a sound-absorbing lining, air paths designed to let cooling air in while keeping noise inside, a residential-grade muffler, and vibration isolation between the engine and the frame. There are costs. A silent set is heavier, bulkier and more expensive than the same engine on an open frame, and the enclosure adds surfaces to keep clean and panels to open at service time. These costs are why open-frame sets are still the better choice for some sites.

Silent or open-frame: the decision

Choose silent when…Choose open-frame when…
People work, sleep or trade near the setIt runs far from anyone (field pump, remote site)
Shops, clinics, events, residential backupConstruction sites that are loud anyway
Night operation is expectedBudget and easy service access matter most
Municipal noise rules applyThe machine moves between jobs constantly

The enclosure also affects installation. A silent set still needs its clearances and airflow: a canopy pushed against a wall recirculates hot air, just like an open set in a shed. The siting rules are in how to install a diesel generator.

Three common buyer mistakes on noise

  1. Comparing figures measured at different distances. This is the most common way datasheets mislead.
  2. Buying a silent set and installing it badly. A hard floor, reflective walls and a corner position can add back much of the reduction the enclosure provides. Soft ground, distance, and pointing the set away from openings reduce noise at no cost.
  3. Forgetting the power question. An enclosure does not change the sizing calculation. Size the set first, using the kVA method, and then choose the enclosure.

Can an open-frame set be made quieter?

Partly, and it helps to know the limits. Distance is the cheapest fix, and soft ground absorbs more than concrete. A simple barrier between the set and the listeners removes several dB, and pointing the exhaust away from openings helps noticeably. A home-made enclosure without designed airflow is a common mistake, because it traps heat faster than it traps noise. If the site needs a quiet machine, buy one designed for it. A factory enclosure works because cooling and noise control were designed together.

Where HTX fits

HTX builds silent (enclosed), open-frame and welding diesel generator sets in the small and medium classes. Compare the silent models on the silent generator page. Ask us for the dB(A) figure and its measuring distance for any model you are comparing. We state it for each unit rather than one number for a whole range, because the enclosure, the engine and the load all change it.
