Most no-starts come down to five cheap causes, and the order to check them is: battery and connections → fuel reaching the engine → air in the fuel lines → filters → compression. Work the list in that order and you’ll find the culprit in minutes in most cases — without guessing, and without replacing parts the engine didn’t ask for.
Before anything else: put the controls in their honest starting position — fuel valve open, throttle at start position, stop lever released, breaker off (start with no load). A surprising share of “failures” end here.
Step 1 — Battery, connections, starter
Electric-start sets fail here more than anywhere else.
- Slow cranking or a click = battery or connections. Check terminals for corrosion and tightness before condemning the battery; a loose clamp mimics a dead battery perfectly.
- Batteries age faster in heat and die quietly in cold. If the set cranks noticeably slower than last month, test the battery now, not after the outage.
- Recoil-start engines skip this step — but a hard pull points to compression or the decompression lever (Step 5).
Step 2 — Is fuel actually reaching the engine?
Obvious, and skipped constantly:
- Tank actually has fuel (gauges lie; look).
- Fuel valve open, and the fuel filter not clogged — a filter overdue for service chokes a starting engine before it bothers a running one.
- Fuel fresh? Diesel that sat for months gums up and starts badly or not at all — the failure modes are covered in can bad diesel fuel damage your engine.
- Water separator drained.
Step 3 — Air in the fuel lines (the classic after any fuel work)
If the tank ran dry, or a filter was changed, or a line was opened, air is in the system and the engine will not start until it’s bled. Most small diesels have a manual primer pump and bleed screws: pump until bubble-free fuel appears, close, crank. If the engine starts and dies repeatedly, suspect air being drawn in through a cracked line or loose fitting on the suction side — the leak lets the engine run, then starves it.
Step 4 — Air filter and exhaust
A fully clogged air filter can prevent starting outright — the engine can’t breathe in enough to fire. Check it takes thirty seconds. And if the exhaust was capped or plugged against rain (correctly!) — remove the cap. It happens.
Step 5 — Compression: the mechanical causes
If cranking is healthy, fuel is clean and bled, and air flows — the remaining suspects are mechanical:
- Valve clearance closed up. As seats wear, valves stop sealing; compression leaks and the engine starts hard, smokes, and weakens gradually. It’s the 500-hour job most people skip — the procedure sits in the maintenance schedule. If starting has gotten gradually worse over weeks, check valves before touching the injector.
- Decompression lever (on engines fitted with one) stuck or misadjusted.
- Injector fouled — weak, dribbling spray instead of a crisp mist. Cleaning or testing an injector is a workshop job, but it’s diagnosable: gradual power loss and smoke usually precede a true no-start.
Cold mornings and high altitude
Diesel ignition depends on compression heat, and both cold and thin air work against it. On cold mornings: correct-viscosity oil, a healthy battery (cranking speed is starting ability in a diesel), and the cold-start aids the engine has (glow plug, excess-fuel device) used as the manual says.
